∑ Pattern index cards (provided by Elly)
4. Procedure:
Time of day: I will set up the bulletin board on Monday November 10, 2002
when I arrive before the children begin school for the day. I will explain
the board to the students before they go to PE and the board will be used
during center time.
Introduction to experience: I will introduce this experience to the children
by reviewing shapes and introducing two new shapes: the pentagon and the
hexagon. I will ask them what they remember about
learning patterns and if they can tell me where they see patterns.
I will them ask them about quilts and ask them to tell me what they know.
Then I will show patterns of quilts and explain how the different shapes
fit together to create these patterns.
Description of experience:
The children will be able to use this manipulative magnet board to experiment
with shapes and making patterns. The board will be kept near the sensory
table and the children will be able to use it during choice time. When
using the board children will be able to create their own quilt pattern or
copy one from the pattern index cards that will be located at the base of
the board. This experience fits well with the teacher’s current unit
on quilts and also with the concept of patterns that was recently introduced
to the children. It will also allow children to experiment with shapes
they have already learned about and can easily recognize.
5. Evaluation of Experience:
This experience went very well. The children did a good job understanding
and identifying the new shapes that I introduced. When using the board
the children created their own patterns through experimenting how shapes
fit together and also followed the patterns cards that I had made for them.
The really took to understanding patterns and could identify which patterns
they might see in a quilt. Some children took a greater interest in
creating patterns and were able to create more elaborate ones than others.
I did not anticipate that the children would follow the pattern cards as
closely as they did and that so many of the students would want to use them.
The students used my board during choice time for two weeks and I had a chance
to observe them on two occasions. They seemed to enjoy the quilt board
and expand their concepts of
